The Fairhope Educational Enrichment Foundation (FEEF) launched its free after school tutoring program this week to assist students who have been identified as at-risk since the school year began in August.
FEEF has tapped Lorrie Katsimpalis, Library Media Specialist at Fairhope Middle School, to serve as the Tutoring Coordinator. Teachers from Fairhope Intermediate School, Fairhope Middle School, Fairhope High School, and J. Larry Newton are working as tutors. Teen tutors from Fairhope High School also are offering free tutoring and will be working under the supervision of Katsimpalis at Fairhope Middle School. The program is currently offered to students who are considered at risk, or those who have a D or F average in a particular subject.
“We received an overwhelming response from parents regarding this program,” Katsimpalis said. “We enrolled approximately 175 students and are at capacity.”
The tutoring program will run for 21 weeks, three days a week. Tutoring sites are currently Fairhope Middle School, Fairhope Intermediate School and J. Larry Newton.
“Between what FEEF allocated to this program and a grant FEEF received from the Alabama State Board of Education Prevention and Support Services Department, we are able to pay the tutors and help the students in greatest need right now,” Cindy McBrearty, FEEF’s Educational Excellence chairperson said. “We hope to raise even more money to expand this program to help any child who simply needs additional help in a subject area. We are very thankful to the school PTCs, the National Junior Honor Society at Fairhope Middle School, and Page and Palette for providing additional funding to support FEEF’s After School Tutoring Program.”
According to Katsimpalis, “The more funds FEEF raises for the tutoring program, the more tutors we can hire to help a greater population of students.”
